Rokko Chan behind-the-scenes with Volcano Man covers
Asagen's Volcano Man stage theme was composed using PxTone Collage, incorporating imported NES sound fonts. The software was developed by Cave Story creator Daisuke Amaya (Pixel) and has since been popularized by chip musicians like George and Jonathan, who performed at the recent Blip Festival concert in New York. To get a sense of the Hokkaido-based composer's process leading up to the development of Rokko Chan, take a look at the ten unused demo tracks on his homepage for the fictitious "Mist Man," "Volt Man" and "Crack Man."
Today a Volcano Man chip remix by game composer Monomer is being unlocked on Bandcamp. Having written an NES-styled score for Ranger Wars and an EP called Trials, the arranger's contribution is in the rare mode of "chip remixes of retro game scores," undertaken on Capcom's Chiptuned Rockman release. Despite there being few instances of 8-bit music remixed by chiptune artists on the scale of a full-length album, the potential for this exercise is limited only by the constraints of the medium.
"Lava Flow" is a guitar rock arrangement by Mutherpluckin' B, also unlocked today on Bandcamp. The artist has, over the course of his three game cover album releases, repeatedly returned to the Mega Man series for inspiration. 8 Bit Democracy (Capitalist Edition) is premiering in digital format for the first time as part of the Nubuwo Summer Bundle, while mp3 files and music videos can be found at his official website.
